The Tamil Nadu government has announced a ban on the usage of multi-layer plastic (MLP) in primary packaging, marking a significant step toward addressing the state’s growing plastic waste crisis. The ban, which took effect recently, prohibits industries from using non-recyclable MLP materials in the packaging of food, beverages, and other consumer goods.
Multi-layer plastics, commonly used for their barrier properties and durability, are challenging to recycle and often end up in landfills or as environmental pollutants. The government has mandated the adoption of recyclable or biodegradable alternatives for primary packaging, pushing industries to explore sustainable packaging solutions.
“This ban is crucial for reducing non-recyclable waste and protecting the environment,” said a Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) official. The move aligns with the state’s broader efforts to promote sustainable practices and reduce dependence on single-use plastics.
While environmental groups have welcomed the decision, industries relying on MLP packaging, particularly in sectors like food processing, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, have expressed concerns about increased costs and supply chain disruptions. Businesses are urging the government to provide financial assistance and technical guidance to transition to alternative materials.
The ban underscores Tamil Nadu’s leadership in sustainable environmental policies, setting a precedent for other states to follow in combating plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy.
