The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has inaugurated a new waste conversion plant in Chinna Sekkadu, marking a significant step toward sustainable waste management in the city. The facility is designed to process plastic and organic waste, converting it into reusable materials such as recycled plastic pellets and compost.
The plant, equipped with advanced machinery, can handle 50 tonnes of waste daily, contributing to the reduction of landfill dependency. A major focus of the facility is the segregation and recycling of plastic waste, aligning with Tamil Nadu’s commitment to minimizing environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable materials.
Speaking at the inauguration, a senior corporation official highlighted the initiative’s environmental and economic benefits, stating, “This plant not only addresses the growing waste challenge but also promotes the circular economy by converting waste into valuable resources.”
The project is expected to create local employment opportunities and encourage community participation in waste segregation. The Corporation has also launched awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of proper waste disposal and the potential of recycling.
This initiative is a key component of Chennai’s broader “Zero Waste” strategy, aiming to achieve a cleaner and greener urban environment. It reflects the city’s proactive approach to tackling the mounting challenges of urban waste management while setting an example for other regions.
