Tamil Nadu’s Plastic Waste Generation Surges to 7.82 Lakh Tonnes in 2022-23

Tamil Nadu recorded a staggering 7.82 lakh tonnes of plastic waste generation in the fiscal year 2022-23, marking a significant increase that underscores the escalating challenges of managing plastic pollution. The rise has been attributed to increased urbanization, growing consumerism, and the widespread use of single-use plastics despite regulatory bans.

The alarming figures highlight the need for comprehensive waste management strategies, including stricter enforcement of plastic bans, investment in recycling infrastructure, and promotion of sustainable alternatives. Municipal corporations across the state, particularly in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, are grappling with the growing burden of plastic waste, with much of it ending up in landfills or waterways.

“The surge in plastic waste generation calls for urgent action to strengthen waste segregation at the source and bolster recycling initiatives,” said a senior official from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).

Environmentalists have stressed the importance of engaging communities in waste reduction efforts and encouraging businesses to take responsibility through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs.

As Tamil Nadu continues to strive toward a plastic-free environment, tackling the 7.82 lakh tonnes of plastic waste generated in 2022-23 will require a coordinated effort involving government, industry, and citizens alike.
