Plastic manufacturers in Tamil Nadu have filed a petition seeking a stay on the government order banning the use of plastic in packaging goods, citing operational and economic challenges. The ban, which is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce plastic pollution, prohibits the use of certain types of plastics in packaging materials across industries.
Industry representatives argue that the abrupt implementation of the ban has disrupted supply chains and increased production costs. “The packaging sector relies heavily on plastic due to its cost-effectiveness and durability. A sudden ban without providing viable alternatives is detrimental to businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” said a spokesperson for the Tamil Nadu Plastic Manufacturers Association (TAPMA).
The petition highlights the lack of readily available eco-friendly alternatives and the financial burden of transitioning to new materials. Manufacturers are urging the government to allow a phased implementation of the ban and to provide support for developing sustainable packaging solutions.
Environmental advocates, however, support the ban, emphasizing the harmful effects of plastic pollution on ecosystems and public health. The Tamil Nadu government has defended the order, stating that it is a critical step toward reducing plastic waste and encouraging the use of biodegradable materials.
The court’s decision on the stay request will likely shape the future of plastic use in packaging in Tamil Nadu, balancing environmental concerns with the needs of the manufacturing sector.
