India Faces Acute Shortage of Natural Rubber, Prices Surge Amid Supply Constraints

India is grappling with a severe shortage of natural rubber, causing a significant surge in prices and impacting industries reliant on this critical raw material. The shortfall is attributed to a combination of factors, including reduced domestic production, climate-related disruptions, and increased demand from sectors such as automotive and healthcare. Natural rubber prices have reportedly risen by over 15% in recent months, putting pressure on manufacturers, particularly those in tire production, footwear, and industrial goods.

Domestic production of natural rubber has been struggling to meet demand due to erratic weather patterns affecting plantations in key producing states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Tripura. Extended monsoons and high temperatures have resulted in reduced latex yield, further exacerbating the supply-demand gap. Additionally, labor shortages and rising input costs for rubber plantation maintenance have added to the production woes.

India’s automotive sector, which accounts for nearly 65% of natural rubber consumption, has been particularly affected, with tire manufacturers facing rising costs and supply chain disruptions. Companies are being forced to explore import options, but global rubber markets are also witnessing tight supply due to similar production challenges in other major rubber-producing countries like Thailand and Indonesia. Import costs have soared, further straining Indian manufacturers.

The shortage has also highlighted the need for long-term policy measures to address India’s dependence on natural rubber imports and boost domestic production. Industry stakeholders are urging the government to introduce incentives for rubber growers, invest in research for high-yielding and climate-resilient rubber varieties, and streamline import duties to ease short-term supply constraints.

While the government is exploring solutions to stabilize the market, the current crisis underscores the vulnerability of critical raw material supply chains and the importance of adopting sustainable agricultural practices to enhance productivity. With demand for natural rubber expected to grow in the coming years, India’s ability to address this shortage will be crucial for maintaining industrial competitiveness and economic stability.
