The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a stay on the environmental clearance granted to the proposed Tiruvallur Polymer Park in Tamil Nadu, citing concerns over environmental degradation and inadequate assessment of potential ecological impacts. The park, planned as a major hub for polymer and plastic-based industries, faced objections from environmental activists and local communities regarding its location and impact on surrounding ecosystems.
The project, which spans 239 acres, is a significant industrial initiative aimed at boosting Tamil Nadu’s plastic and polymer manufacturing sector. However, the NGT highlighted issues such as the park’s proximity to sensitive ecological zones, potential for groundwater contamination, and insufficient plans for managing industrial waste.
“While industrial development is important, it must not come at the cost of irreversible environmental harm,” stated the tribunal in its ruling. The stay will remain in effect until a more detailed environmental impact assessment (EIA) is conducted and adequate safeguards are proposed.
The Tamil Nadu government and project proponents have assured that they will address the concerns raised and work toward sustainable solutions. They emphasize the park’s potential to attract investments, generate employment, and enhance the state’s industrial competitiveness.
While the project holds significant economic promise, the NGT’s intervention underscores the need for balancing development with environmental preservation. The resolution of this case is expected to set a precedent for similar industrial projects across India.
